University of Michigan
The University of Michigan (www.umich.edu) is synonymous with Ann Arbor, and is one of America's great public universities. Academically, the U-M ranks among the world's top universities and its graduate and professional programs consistently rank within the nation's top ten. The University of Michigan has made a $900 million commitment to new life sciences facilities and programs.
U-M is also one of the world's premiere research institutions with over $700 million in research funding in 2005. Thanks in large part to the U-M, the region is home to several federal research labs, including:
- The Department of Interior's Great Lakes Science Center
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL)
- The Environmental Protection Agency's National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory
Major National Science Foundation grants for leading-edge research programs have been awarded to U-M in optical engineering, laser technology, and cement-based materials.

The Stephen M. Ross School of Business (www.bus.umich.edu) at U-M is one of the most highly regarded business schools in the country.
The Ross School offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees, as well as an executive education program. Graduates are particularly valuable because they can earn dual degrees with the many U-M colleges and schools including engineering, medicine, and information.

In the last three years, the U-M has spawned more than 50 new biotech companies, most of them in the Ann Arbor area.
The University of Michigan Medical School (www.med.umich.edu) is one of the largest research-intensive medical schools in the country and its 1,350-member faculty is one of the nation's largest. With a $900 million total operating budget the school is a leader in research, clinical and education enterprises.
The U-M Medical School has a tradition of collaboration between basic science researchers and clinical colleagues and has over $300 million in total research funds annually.
The school consistently ranks among the top-tier institutions in federally-funded research. In FY '04 it ranked eleventh among all institutions in the amount of grants received from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In fact, The U-M Medical School generates approximately 70 percent of the University of Michigan's total NIH research funding.
